Verging away from our usual travel stories, for something different: a book review of The Montessori Toddler by Simone Davies. I bought this book recently because I’ve been ‘Montessori Curious’ and wanted to learn more about the principles of this approach and how we could adopt elements for our family.
If you haven’t heard of the Montessori Method, a super brief overview is that it’s an education approach that is child-centred and focuses on observing the child and preparing an environment that responds to their interests allowing the child to be self-directed in their learning.
Some principles you might hear in relation to the Montessori Method include:
- Freedom within limits,
- Trust the child/Follow the child,
- Foster a sense of wonder.
It’s a pretty detailed (and amazing) philosophy that I can’t do justice to in a blog post, but if this has piqued your interest, take some time to learn a little more.
And a fantastic introduction, if you are a parent of a toddler, is with Simone Davies’ book The Montessori Toddler. Just on an aesthetic basis, this book is a delight – elegant design with great quality print production. The writing style, like the design, is highly engaging and I honestly could not put the book down.
The Montessori Toddler is very thoughtfully structured, moving through the underpinning theory through to practical strategies for supporting your child’s development using these principles. Every page was either an ‘a-ha moment’ or affirmed something I had already organically gravitated towards.
This book has really enlightened me and although I don’t think we’ll be a ‘strictly Montessori’ family, we have absolutely implemented a tonne of Montessori inspired ideas ranging from how we organise our home and play experiences through to how we speak to our daughter and how we conduct ourselves.
If you’re curious about Montessori (or you have a toddler you’re struggling to understand!) The Montessori Toddler is a great read. I’d also highly recommend Simone’s website The Montessori Notebook which has an abundance of resources for all ages.
